This week, at 5:00 pm PT on Tuesday, June 30, my guests are Jason and Jane Sarouhan of J2 Guides. They are accredited Gap Year Consultants who have advised and mentored thousands of parents and students, including guiding wilderness and cultural programs worldwide.
Taking a gap year, especially between high school and college, is growing in popularity. A gap year can give students time and experience to make important decisions about their career paths and education, plus allow them to develop new life skills, explore hidden talents, experience different cultures, prep for college, network with others, and even gain valuable work experience.
With the worldwide impact of COVID-19 expected to affect gap year and college plans for many in the fall, this talk will be especially poignant. High school seniors, college students, and parents who want to better understand gap year options for fall 2020 and beyond should plan to attend. Many colleges and universities have already announced they will deliver classes via Zoom or other online platforms this fall, so a gap year might be just the solution for students not ready or not sure to begin or continue their college careers.
Some of the topics the Sarouhan’s will address include:
- COVID-19’s impact on international program options
- Best practices for planning your gap year
- Domestic program options, such as volunteering, mentoring, internships, immersion programs.
Registration is FREE and you need to pre-book to get the Zoom link. Programs are 30 minutes of chat plus 15 minutes of questions and discussion with listeners.

Online Workshop Added: Secrets of Successful Note Taking
We're excited to announce the addition of an online version of our popular Secrets of Successful Note Taking to our summer schedule. This workshop for high school students teaches effective note taking techniques for different learning styles, giving students methods for organizing notes taken from presentations, text, and/or meetings.
Like our other online workshop offerings (Mastering Middle School, Middle School Blitz, and Nailing Ninth Grade), this program has been optimized for online presentation by our coaches who are experts in delivering short, activity-packed modules designed to engage students with live instruction.
For further details, including schedule, pricing, and registration information, visit our Online Workshops Page.
Online or In-Person, Which is Better?
While some families and students are eager to return to small group, in-person classroom settings with peers, other families prefer (or need) to stick with virtual summer programs this year. Whatever your choice, we get it. Just know that for most students, our online programs are as equally effective as our in-person workshops.
To answer some of your questions (including our management of COVID-19 concerns) and help you determine which option is best for your situation, SOS4Students has put together a Frequently Asked Questions Page about our in-person and online workshop formats. You should also feel free to give us a call at 510-531-4767 or email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with any questions.
