SOS4Students Weekly Zoom Talk with Expert

We are excited to announce the launch of a weekly chat with an expert, called “The Inside Scoop.” At 5 pm PT, Tuesday, June 23, I will be sitting down for a shmooze on Zoom, streamed live on Facebook. Each week we will have a terrific professional providing us the latest on everything from college admissions in 2020/2021, gap year programs, managing Zoom learning with ADHD, and other topics.

My first guest is Amy Morgenstern, Ph.D., MFA, of Blue Stars Admissions Consulting. Dr. Morgenstern brings a wealth of academic and multicultural experience to each essential part of the college planning process.

Here are some of the topics she will address:

  • Will college admissions be harder next year because more students will be taking gap years and postponing enrollment?
  • How should I tackle the new coronavirus essay question in the Common Application?
  • What do good colleges look for in an applicant?
  • Do I need to be a "leader" to get into a good school? Do I need to be on a sports team to get into a good school?
  • Now that most activities are cancelled because of the pandemic, what kinds of things can I do now to build my admissions portfolio?
  • Do I need to already have chosen a career path to get into my dream school?
  • Now that most schools are going test optional this year, should I apply to more reach schools?
  • Would it help or hurt me to apply EA/ED this year?

Registration is free and you need to pre-book to get the Zoom link. Programs are 30 minutes of chat and 15 minutes of questions and discussion with our listeners - you and your friends!  Of course you can call in from the beach, or the mountains, or your house (the silver lining of Zoom).  REGISTER HERE:  Register at Zoom

Summer Workshops: Online or In-Person (Your Choice!)

SOS4Students summer workshops are going to be both online and in-person this year (see lineup below). These programs provide tools and techniques for academic success for students 11 to 17. They are the perfect antidote to the distance learning blues of the last three months. So let us help reboot your teen’s learning experience, invigorating them for the new year with engaging programming and expert executive functioning support.

Parenting in Place Masterclass

“Parenting in Place” is an 8-week live masterclass presented by a collective of prominent thought leaders in parenting, neuroscience, education, and well-being. The group formed earlier this spring with a goal of sharing support, insights, and career advice with schools, parents, corporations, organizations, and mental health groups in response to quarantining, social distancing, remote learning, and heightened racial tensions.

Participants can tune in live every Wednesday at 8pm EST / 5pm PST via Zoom to learn strategies and ideas for how they and their families can thrive this summer and better navigate our challenging times. Content covers a variety of ages, from preschool through young adults and beyond. There is a one-time $39 fee to participate for the duration of the sessions. Live sessions began June 10, and all previous sessions can be accessed via replay once you join. Get More Info & Register

Speed Reading for Middle School Students

Speed reading for middle school students can boost comprehension and reading confidence. Mindful Speed Reading for Middle School Students is a special online course taught by a colleague of mine, Bara Sapir, through her group, MindFlow. In less time than a typical school day, students master how to read exponentially faster without compromising comprehension. Course dates are available weekends starting in June through September. Get More Info & Register

"Screenagers Next Chapter" Documentary Screening

The local chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics is hosting a virtual showing (by Zoom) of the documentary, "Screenagers Next Chapter: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience," followed by a Q&A session with filmmaker, Delaney Ruston, MD. The film examines the science behind teens' emotional challenges, the interplay of social media, and most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety, and depression in our digital age. Tuesday, June 23, 2020 from 6:30-8:30pm PT. Cost is $10 (free for AAP Chapter 1 Members). Get More Info & Register
